Once the number of visitors to your blog or web site starts to increase, you may want to start considering ways to “monetize” your site. This helps to pay for your online business costs, provides an additional stream of income for you and, if you promote quality products and offers that match the needs of your readers, can even provide a valuable service to your visitors.

The problem, is knowing what products to promote. Your blog or web site only has so much prime “real estate” you can use for advertising. Most internet marketing experts suggest that, if you are serious about building a successful business online, it is important that you continually test all elements on your page. This also includes testing what products you promote to your visitors.

One powerful method of testing is called “split-testing”. Fundamentally, this involves testing two “variables,” or different elements, against one another (e.g. a headline, an offer, advertising banners, different colors, different font sizes, etc …) and seeing which of the two variables performs better for you in terms of converting visitors to clicks, leads, sales, etc …

This sounds fairly simple in theory. For example, you show Ad Banner A to visitor #1, then Ad Banner B to visitor #2, then Ad Banner A again to visitor #3, then Ad Banner B again to visitor #4 and so on … At some point you would have enough statistical information to decide which of the two advertising banners performs better on your blog or web site (for example, which banner gets you more clicks). You would then keep the better banner (known as your “control”) and test a new banner (i.e. Banner C) against your control banner to see whether you can outperform or improve on your results.

In practice, however, split-testing is a bit more challenging that it seems. For one, you need to have sufficient visitors coming to your site to generate enough significant statistical information to be able to make a decision. For a more detailed explanation of this type of testing, go here: A/B Split Testing.

The important point to take away here, is that you need to build testing systems into your online business strategy and start testing.

Which brings me back to the topic of knowing what products to promote on your site.

I have been looking for a while for a tool that would allow me to test different products on my blogs and web sites by setting up different campaigns for different sites, rotating different offers, then analyzing and comparing statistical information, such as impressions, clicks and conversion rates.

I have found a great tool that is simple and easy to use, inexpensive and does pretty much exactly what I want. The name of this software is Widget Ad Generator.

Before purchasing this software, I emailed Todd Thompson, the CEO of Widget Ad Generator with a question about the software’s ability to create separate campaigns for different niche sites, and received a same-day reply from Todd with an answer. I have emailed him a couple more times and he is very quick to respond, so on that level I’m satisfied with the attention to customers given by this company.

I was also impressed with how easy the software is to install and use. You install it on one of your own domains and create / edit all of your ads and campaigns (for an unlimited number of web sites) from one single admin panel. The software then creates several types of codes for your ad campaigns (e.g. javascript, PHP) and you then choose the code that bests suits your preferences, paste it into your site or blog text widget and the ads show up instantly.

Even though Widget Ad Generator is a fairly intuitive application, the software comes with installation and instruction videos, which makes it really easy to set up and get going. On the first day of purchasing Widget Ad Generator, I already had over 40 ads rotating throughout my network of blogs and web sites.

I also like the flexibility of the ad layouts. You can select different layouts to match your presentation style (e.g. choose to display your ads as a vertical banner with image on top and text below, or text on top and image below, or as a horizontal banner with text to the left or the right of an image), and even though you can select from a range of ad sizes, the software allows you to further fine tune the size of the ads on your web site or blog before publishing.

Setting up new ads, new campaigns and duplicating ads for new campaigns is a breeze. You can also combine products and offers from different providers (e.g. Commission Junction, Clickbank, your own products, etc …), which makes this very powerful indeed, as it maximises use of your site’s advertising real estate.

For a limited time Widget Ad Generator is also including a bonus eBay ads module feature in the package at no extra cost. To set up an eBay ad banner using Widget Ad Generator takes less than a minute. I’ve already set up several eBay 160×600 ads and placed them on the sidebar of some of my sites and am very pleased with the results so far, especially now that eBay’s new affiliate system allows you to geotarget ads depending on which country your visitor is coming from.

In terms of giving you control over your ads, once you add the script to your site, you then control everything from your admin section – colors, text, images, add new ads, change the ad text and display settings, etc … Widget Ad Generator automatically tracks impressions and clicks (it can also track your sales conversions once you input your sales results) and even highlights your best performing ad and campaign automatically when you login.

As you can see, I’m very impressed with Widget Ad Generator and have no hesitation in recommending it as a great tool for rotating and testing ads on your web site or blog.

Are there any downsides to this software? As far as I can see, for the price and functionality, no, not really! Todd encourages users to submit suggestions for improvements, so I expect future versions of the software will have a more improved Ad Management area (currently all ads display on one page, so once you have a lot of ads set up, it can become a bit of a chore to keep scrolling down to the bottom of the page to view the last ad created), the ability to select different font styles and sizes for headings and body text, and better split-testing control (currently ads rotate randomly).

The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a powerful and affordable solution that allows you to create and rotate your own ads on any section of your web site or blog, then you should definitely take a look at Widget Ad Generator.
